Proposal to list medical devices supplied by Vantive Limited

Hospital devices Consultation Closed

What we’re proposing

Pharmac is seeking feedback on a proposal to enter into a medical device listing agreement from 1 April 2026 with Vantive Limited (“Vantive”).

The proposed agreement covers medical devices in the following category:

Consultation closes at 4pm Tuesday 3 February 2026 and feedback can be emailed to julie.crisford@pharmac.govt.nz.

What would the effect be?

From 1 April 2026 medical devices supplied by Vantive in the peritoneal dialysis category would be listed under a national agreement for all Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora (“Health NZ”) hospitals to purchase under, subject to consultation and approval by Pharmac’s Board or delegate (“Agreement”).

The Agreement would not be for sole supply and Health NZ hospitals could continue to purchase other supplier’s brands of peritoneal dialysis equipment and consumables.

The Agreement would supersede any existing Health NZ agreements with Vantive for the medical devices included in the Agreement. Any medical devices listed in the Agreement and purchased by Health NZ hospitals would be in accordance with the terms and conditions, including price, stated in the Agreement effective from the date of listing on the Pharmaceutical Schedule.

Pricing for the medical devices in the Agreement, subject to any prior termination of the Agreement, would not be increased without prior consultation and approval by Pharmac.

Who we think will be interested

About these medical devices

Peritoneal Dialysis is a type of renal dialysis treatment which uses the peritoneum in a patient’s abdomen as the membrane for fluid exchange. The dialysis fluid is introduced into the patient’s peritoneum and then removed with the waste products absorbed.

This can occur whilst a patient sleeps (automated peritoneal dialysis, APD) or during the day as a patient moves around (Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis, CAPD). The medical devices in this category include the dialysis equipment, fluids that are introduced and the associated consumables such as catheters and preparatory products.

Why we’re proposing this

Pharmac entered into an agreement with Baxter Healthcare Limited in February 2021 for medical devices in the peritoneal dialysis category. In early 2025, Baxter Healthcare Limited divested its kidney care division, resulting in the formation of Vantive Limited(external link). Following this transition, Pharmac has reached an agreement with Vantive to maintain supply under agreed pricing and terms for the New Zealand market.
