Moxifloxacin tab 400mg: Your brand is changing from Avelox to Moximed
Between 1 July and 1 December 2026 you will notice your brand will change from Avelox to Moximed
The same active ingredient, in the same amount
Moximed contains the same active ingredient as Avelox, in the same strength.
Both brands are 400 mg moxifloxacin tablets. This means they work in the same way to treat infections.
Moximed tablets are similar in appearance to Avelox, but there are some small differences. The tablets are still red and film-coated, but they are slightly smaller and have different markings. While the tablets may look slightly different, the active ingredient and dose are the same.
Some of the non-active ingredients are different between the brands. These ingredients do not affect how the medicine works.

Approved by Medsafe
Medsafe has reviewed the Moximed brand of moxifloxacin and approved it for use in New Zealand. It meets New Zealand standards of safety, quality, and effectiveness.
When will this happen?
From 1 July 2026 Moximed will be funded and from 1 December 2026, Moximed will become the main funded brand of moxifloxacin tablets.
Why is this happening
Pharmac runs regular tender processes to secure supply of funded medicines. This helps ensure medicines remain available, affordable, and reliably supplied. Moximed has been selected as the new funded brand of moxifloxacin tablets through this process.
Changing to a different brand can help Pharmac manage the costs of medicines. Any savings we make are returned to the medicines budget to help pay for new medicines.
Your brand change is helping fund more medicines for more New Zealanders.

Moximed will be listed from 1 July 2026. Avelox will be delisted from 1 December 2026 and will no longer be funded.

Information for clinicians
There are no changes to the funding criteria or access to moxifloxacin tablets. Special Authority criteria remain the same.
Clinical advice did not identify any reasons to avoid a brand change for this medicine.
The supply of an alternative cannot be guaranteed.
