Decision to list point of care testing devices supplied by Medtronic

Hospital devices Decision

What we’re doing

We are pleased to announce the approval of a listing agreement with Medtronic New Zealand Limited (“Medtronic”) for the supply of point of care testing equipment and consumables to Health NZ | Te Whatu Ora (“Health NZ”).

In summary this will result in:

  • Medtronic’s point of care testing equipment and consumables being listed in Part III of Section H of the Pharmaceutical Schedule from 1 June 2025 under a national agreement that all Health NZ hospitals may purchase under; and
  • Health NZ hospitals being able to purchase other suppliers’ bands of point of care testing equipment and consumables as the agreement is not for sole supply.

Any changes to the original proposal?

This decision was subject to a consultation letter dated 3 April 2025. No changes have been made to the original proposal.

Who we think will be most interested

    • Clinical Product Evaluators
    • Laboratory staff
    • Point of Care Testing Coordinators

Detail about this decision

In April 2021 Pharmac issued a Registrations of Interest (“ROI”) for listing agreements for point of care testing equipment.

The ROI was for non-exclusive national agreements for listing on the Pharmaceutical Schedule. The ROI invited registrations of interest for the supply of medical devices where New Zealand Health Partnerships (“NZHP”) has previously released a Request for Proposal (“RFP”) process from suppliers for listing on the Pharmaceutical Schedule. Pharmac has been working with suppliers who responded to the ROI and were progressed to contract negotiation to seek provisional agreements. This is the latest agreement to arise from this process.

After completing consultation on the provisional agreement with Medtronic, Pharmac has decided to list Medtronic’s point of care testing equipment and consumables in Part III of Section H of the Pharmaceutical Schedule from 1 June 2025.

The list of products will be available on Pharmac’s website from 1 June 2025.

Health NZ Hospitals can continue to choose which point of care testing equipment and consumables they purchase, including those from other suppliers. Health NZ hospitals that purchase medical devices in this category from Medtronic must do so under the terms and conditions, including pricing, in the agreement from 1 June 2025.
