Ferrous sulfate: Brand is changing from Ferodan to Ferro-Liquid

Brand change Active

Your brand of ferrous sulfate oral liquid is changing, from Ferodan to Ferro-Liquid.

Ferro-Liquid is the new brand

If you take Ferodan for iron deficiency, you will be changing to a new brand of oral liquid, Ferro-Liquid.

The packaging will look different and it comes in a smaller bottle.

Ferro-Liquid has the same active ingredient as Ferodan, and should work in your body the same way. It has been reviewed by Medsafe. Medsafe has found it meets New Zealand standards of safety, quality, and effectiveness.

People's responses to a medicine can change, if you notice any side effects from taking ferrous sulfate, talk to the person who prescribed it.

Key dates

September 2025 | Stock of Ferodan expected to run out

1 September 2025 | Subsidy for Ferro-Liquid updated in the Schedule

1 February 2026 | Ferro-Liquid will be the main funded brand of ferrous sulfate oral liquid

1 February 2026 | Ferodan will be delisted.

Why is this happening?

The supplier of Ferodan (Viatris) decided to discontinue this product in New Zealand. Pharmac asked other suppliers if they could supply ferrous sulphate oral liquid and we reached an agreement with the supplier of Ferro-Liquid (AFT).
