Dapsone (25 mg tablets): Brand change
The current brand of Dapsone has stopped being made. An alternative is being funded.

Temporary alternative
Link, the supplier, has found an alternative to ensure people can continue to access treatment. It will be funded and available to order from 1 September 2026. Medsafe has not reviewed it so it must be prescribed and dispensed in line with section 29A of the Medicines Act.

Prescribing and supplying an unapproved medicine
Section 29A of the Medicines Act 1981 allows for medicines that are not Medsafe approved to be prescribed and supplied to people when there is supply issue affecting the registered brand.
We know supplying an unapproved medicine is not ideal. In this case, however, this will allow people to continue to access an appropriate treatment.

Expected resolution
Pharmac is working on finding a long-term solution with an approved product. In June 2026, we consulted on Medsurge supplying Dapsone. We are reviewing the feedback we received and will notify the outcome of the consultation once a final decision is made.
