Nifuran: Your brand is changing to Nitrofurantoin Clinect
The factory that makes Nifuran has closed. A new brand has been funded Nitrofurantoin Clinect.
Why is this happening?
The factory which made Nifuran has closed down. The supplier, Clinect, has found a new source for nitrofurantoin tablets so you can continue to access your treatment.
Same active ingredient, in the same amount
The new brand contains the same amount of active ingredient as Nifuran. It is designed to work in your body the same way. You should not notice any difference.
Medsafe New Zealand has reviewed Nitrofurantoin Clinect. It has confirmed that the new brand meets New Zealand standards of safety, quality, and effectiveness.
There are some minor differences to the inactive ingredients. If you have any concerns, you can talk to your pharmacist about what this might mean for you.
The tablets look similar
The tablets for both brands are round, yellow, and have a score mark on one side.
The new tablets are slightly rounded (biconvex) where the old Nifuran tablets were flat.
When is this happening?
There is ample supply of Nifuran in the country. However it expires in October 2026. You can expect your pharmacist to change your brand to Nitrofurantoin Clinect before then.
