Bayer has discontinued its Gastrografin and Urografin products.

Gastrografin and Urografin discontinued

The supplier, Bayer has made the decision to discontinue these products. Earlier this year Bayer recalled Gastrografin and Urografin 30% contrast media, following the detection of an impurity. This recall affected all stock globally.

Bayer placed its supply of both products into quarantine and is working with Medsafe on recall arrangements.

Alternatives

The supplier has indicated which funded alternatives may be suitable alternatives. These include:

  • Ioscan (diatrizoate sodium)
  • Omnipaque 
  • Visipaque

All funded contrast media | HML Online(external link)

The supplier noted that barium sulphate may be a suitable alternative. However, all barium sulphate products are facing ongoing supply shortages.
