Insulin syringes: Embecta

New look Supply issue Active

BD brand insulin syringes and pen needles have new packaging and are called Embecta. There is also a supply issue affecting insulin syringes.

We understand that there might be limited supplies of some gauges of Embecta syringes. We are working with the supplier to prioritise supply of needles for use with insulin. 

This supply issue is not related to the packaging change. 

Please talk to your pharmacist or the person who prescribes your insulin if you have any issues.

What changed with the packaging?

Fom 1 July 2026, the packaging changed for insulin syringes (BD Ultra Fine and BD Ultra Fine II) and insulin pen needles (BD Micro Fine). These changed to Embecta packaging.

New packaging, same product

Although the packaging looks different, there has been no change to the actual syringe or pen needle. Please be assured that these are the same products, manufactured to the same specifications and quality standards as the BD products you are familiar with.

Information for pharmacists

The change in packaging required a change of Pharmacode for these products. All new Pharmacodes were listed from 1 August 2026.

The supplier is now supplying the Embecta brand. The BD remains listed to allow pharmacies to dispense and claim for this brand.
