What is the Hospital Medical Devices List?
The Hospital Medical Devices List is a comprehensive list of medical devices. It is managed by Pharmac and Health New Zealand can purchase
It contains over 200,000 products that are used by Health New Zealand in public hospitals.
We will continue to add products to this list to reflect new and updated devices and technologies and reflect changing health needs.
The list is a part of the Pharmaceutical Schedule.
The Pharmaceutical Schedule lists more than 4,500 medicines that are dispensed in the community or contracted to be given in public hospitals.
Where do I find the Hospital Medical Devices List?
Each month, we publish the latest version of the Hospital Medical Devices List as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and two PDFs. We also publish a summary of all the changes since the last month.
What’s in the Hospital Medical Devices List?
The Hospital Medical Devices List contains contracted and non-contracted items. It lists:
- the product name
- brand name of the product
- product type
- name of the supplier
- categorisation information
- contracted listing price (where contracted).
The Hospital Medical Devices List does not contain confidential information, like the terms and conditions we’ve agreed with suppliers. Health NZ procurement staff have this information.
From 1 July 2025, the list will contain some devices that are not under contract. We added them to build a comprehensive list of devices used by public hospitals. We continue negotiating contracts to bring more devices under Pharmac contract management.
Who can use the Hospital Medical Devices List?
Most products listed on the Hospital Medical Devices List have contracts as negotiated and agreed to by suppliers and Pharmac. Only Health NZ hospitals can access the listed products as contracted. This includes the price, terms, and conditions as outlined in each device contract.
GP practices and private hospitals need to contact suppliers directly about medical devices they want to access.
How to use the current Hospital Medical Devices List
Currently Health NZ hospitals and specialist services are encouraged to procure hospital medical devices from Pharmac’s Hospital Medical Devices List.
If Health NZ hospitals procure a contracted device from the Hospital Medical Devices List, they must use the Pharmac listing terms and conditions.
Pharmac’s hospital medical device contracts supersede all national, regional, and local Health NZ contracts for the same hospital medical device (with the same supplier).
The Health Sector Catalogue
The Health Sector Catalogue, developed by Health NZ, is intended to be the primary place to search for hospital medical device items and related information.
The Health Sector Catalogue is intended to be the data source for medical device product and pricing information for Health NZ. It’s made up of detail from Pharmac, medical device suppliers, and Health NZ.
Pharmac’s Hospital Medical Devices List will integrate into the Health Sector Catalogue.
We will also continue to publish the Hospital Medical Devices List on our website
