Fluoxetine: Supply issue
Fluoxetine hydrochloride is a widely used antidepressant medicine.
There are two funded forms available, a 20 mg capsule and a 20 mg dispersible tablet.
Supply of fluoxetine capsules 20mg is available. We expect the Arrow brand to be supplied until approximately September 2020 when the Fluox brand is expected to become available.
Stock of the dispersible tablets is low. Supply of the Fluox brand is expected by mid-June 2020, replacing the Arrow-Fluoxetine brand.
There is adequate stock in New Zealand to cover normal demand until then. However, there may be an uneven distribution at the pharmacy level.
It may be necessary for patients to try alternative pharmacies or for pharmacies to work collaboratively to access stock.
There were previous stock shortages of both the tablets and capsules earlier this year, which were resolved once shipments arrived. The earlier capsule shortage placed pressure on the stock of tablets which were used as an alternative.
There are approximately 76,000 people taking the capsules and approximately 19,000 people taking the dispersible tablets. The tablets are prescribed for patients who cannot swallow capsules or for use in a daily dose that needs a half tablet.
