Dear [name redacted]

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION

Thank you for your request dated 20 January 2020, under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA), for information relating to Zapril.  You asked:

  • Who manufactures Zapril?
  • Is Zapril a Generic?
  • If so, what is the brand name and who manufacturers the brand?

PHARMAC Response

Zapril is a tradename of the generic medicine cilazapril.  It is manufactured by Mylan Laboratories Limited and is supplied in New Zealand by Mylan New Zealand Ltd.

The originator brand of cilazapril was Inhibace, manufactured by F Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd in Switzerland and supplied in New Zealand by Roche Products (NZ) Ltd.

From 1 September 2019, PHARMAC changed the funded brand of cilazapril to Zapril and from 1 February 2020 Zapril will be the only fully funded brand of cilazapril.

Zapril has the same active ingredient as other brands of cilazapril and is delivered in the body the same way.  This means it will have the same effect as other brands.
