Colecalciferol 1.25 mg (50,000iu) capsule
Colecalciferol is a form of vitamin D and it is used to prevent and treat vitamin D deficiency.
What is changing?
The brand of colecalciferol that PHARMAC funds will change from Cal-d-Forte to Vit. D3.
When will the change happen? From 1 March 2016, Vit. D3 will be fully funded and Cal-d-Forte will no longer be available.
Will the new brand work the same?
Yes. Only the brand of your medicine is changing. The newly funded capsules will have the same amount of the active ingredient, colecalciferol as the one you are currently taking. This means that you should have the same effect from taking the Vit. D3 brand as you did from taking the Cal-d-Forte brand.
Medsafe, the agency that approves medicines for use in New Zealand, carefully considered the safety and effectiveness of Vit. D3 before approving it.
You shouldn’t notice any difference in how you feel after taking Vit. D3. If you do notice any major changes or side effects, please talk with your doctor about it.
Is there anyone who can’t take Vit D3?
Vit.D3 contains soya oil inside the capsule. Some people are allergic to soya oil and some people with peanut allergy also react to soya oil. This product should not be used by people who are allergic to peanut or soya.
Will the tablets look different?
Yes. Because Vit. D3 is made by a different supplier, the medication does look different. Instead of a white tablet, you will take an oval shaped capsule that is a pale yellow colour. Some people find swallowing capsules easier than tablets.
Will the new brand cost me more?
No. You will pay the usual patient co-payment. There will be no extra cost for you for Vit. D3.
Where can I get more information?
Your doctor, nurse and pharmacist will also help guide you during the changeover period.
