In May 2014, PHARMAC released a discussion document about our proposed approach to managing hospital medical devices. The feedback we received in response to this and our other consultations below will continue to be used as our medical device activity grows.
Decision criteria – May 2013 to March 2014
These consultations in 2013 and 2014 gathered feedback from the health sector and the wider community about PHARMAC’s decision criteria. The criteria, which were part of PHARMAC’s wider Operational Policies and Procedures, guided our medicines and medical device decisions.
As a result of the responses, PHARMAC’s decision criteria changed to factors for consideration.

Applying the PHARMAC model to hospital medical devices management – October to November 2013
In 2013, PHARMAC sought information to make sure we knew what we needed to consider when applying the PHARMAC model to managing hospital medical devices.
As part of this consultation we held open forums around the country. You can read summaries of the issues discussed at these forums.
PHARMAC’s initial medical device activity – May to June 2013
In 2013, we sought responses from suppliers of medical devices, DHBs and associated health and other groups about PHARMAC beginning interim procurement activity in a range of device categories.
PHARMAC and hospital medical devices: obtaining clinical input – November 2012 to March 2013
From November 2012 to March 2013, PHARMAC gathered feedback from the health sector about clinical engagement for the medical devices work programme.
