PHARMAC Committees

Consumer Advisory Committee (CAC)

The Consumer Advisory Committee Consumer Advisory Committee (CAC) provides PHARMAC with input from a patient or health consumer perspective. The committee can provide input on a broad range of PHARMAC's activities, including policy, Optimal Use of Medicines campaigns, and around medicines funding issues. It is not, however, involved in the assessment of pharmaceutical funding applications.

The committee meets at least twice a year and is guided by its Terms of Reference (10 pages, 26 KB). Its meetings are recorded and minutes of those meeting are available to view here.

Hospital Pharmaceuticals Advisory Committee (HPAC)

PHARMAC now has responsibility for managing expenditure on hospital pharmaceuticals, under its National Hospital Pharmaceutical Strategy (64 pages, 172 KB). The Hospital Pharmaceuticals Advisory Committee (HPAC) has been established to provide advice on this process. The committee is made up of District Health Board (DHB) pharmacy managers and funding and purchasing managers from a range of DHB, and meets on a regular basis.

Pharmacology and Therapeutics Advisory Committee (PTAC)

The Pharmacology and Therapeutics Advisory Committee (PTAC) is PHARMAC’s primary clinical advisory committee. PTAC, which comprises 10 practicing doctors, considers clinical evidence around funding applications, and takes into account other issues before making recommendations to PHARMAC. PTAC is governed by a set of published Guidelines (20 pages, 271 KB). Its minutes are recorded and can be viewed here.
