Topical anti-acne treatment (adapalene) and urea funding approved

PHARMAC is pleased to announce the approval of an agreement with Galderma Australia Pty Limited for adapalene 0.1% cream and gel (Differin). Differin is a topical retinoid used for the treatment of acne vulgaris. In addition, as a result of the agreement, the subsidy for urea 10% cream (Nutraplus) will be increased to match the current manufacturer’s price so that it becomes fully funded.

Summary of the decision

Adapalene (Differin) Differin will be listed, fully funded, in Section B of the Pharmaceutical Schedule with no Special Authority or endorsement restrictions, from 1 October 2010, at a subsidy and price of $22.89 per 30 g OP (ex-manufacturer, excluding GST). Each subsidised dispensing of Differin will be limited to a maximum of 30 g (i.e. 1 pack). A confidential rebate will apply to all sales of Differin, which will reduce the net subsidy paid by PHARMAC. Urea (Nutraplus) Nutraplus will be fully funded in Section B of the Pharmaceutical Schedule from 1 October 2010, at a subsidy and price of $3.07 per 100 g (ex-manufacturer, excluding GST).
