Proposal relating to the funding of travoprost

PHARMAC is seeking feedback on a proposal relating to a provisional agreement with Pharmaco (NZ) Ltd for the glaucoma treatment, travoprost (Travatan). This proposal would mean that reference pricing would not occur as previously notified on 12 March 20101 but would result in travoprost (Travatan) eye drops remaining fully subsidised.

Feedback sought PHARMAC welcomes feedback on this proposal. To provide feedback, please submit it in writing by Monday, 6 September 2010 to: Sue Anne Yee Therapeutic Group Manager PHARMAC PO Box 10 254 Wellington 6143 Email: sueanne.yee@pharmac.govt.nz Fax: 04 460 4995

All feedback received before the closing date will be considered by PHARMAC’s Board (or Chief Executive acting under delegated authority) prior to making a decision on this proposal. Details of the proposal Travoprost would be fully funded in Section B of the Pharmaceutical Schedule at the following price and subsidy (ex-manufacturer, exclusive of GST) from 1 October 2010:

Chemical Travoprost Presentation Eye drops 0.004% Brand Travatan Pack size 2.5mL OP Current subsidy and price 9.75 (19.50) Proposed subsidy and price 19.50

Travatan would be protected from subsidy reduction or delisting until 30 June 2012. A confidential rebate would also apply to Travatan. Background In April 2010, the subsidy for travoprost was reference priced to the subsidy of latanoprost. This was subject of a notification letter dated 12 March 20101. To allow sufficient time for patients to return to their ophthalmologists for a review of their medication, a six month transition period was provided. During this transition period from 1 April 2010 until 30

September 2010, additional subsidy by endorsement is available for patients who were prescribed travoprost prior to 1 April 2010. Subsequent to the notification of reference pricing, PHARMAC and Pharmaco (NZ) Ltd have entered into a provisional agreement which would enable travoprost to continue to be fully subsidised at its current list price of $19.50, until at least 30 June 2012.
