Pharmaceutical Schedule - Update News

5

Gemcitabine hydrochloride and vinorelbine – access widening

From 1 May 2010; the Special Authority criteria for subsidy of all listed presentations of gemcitabine hydrochloride and vinorelbine will be widened to include Hodgkin’s Disease and T-cell Lymphoma – see page 19 for more details. Gemcitabine hydrochloride and vinorelbine are Pharmaceutical Cancer Treatments.

Lignocaine urethral syringe – new listing

A new presentation of lignocaine gel 2% urethral syringe (Pfizer) will be listed in the Pharmaceutical Schedule from 1 May 2010. This provides an alternative lignocaine-containing urethral syringe to the currently listed product (lignocaine gel 2% with chlorhexidine 0.05%), which will also remain fully funded.

Blood Glucose Test Strip – claiming reminder

It has been bought to PHARMAC’s attention that some pharmacies may be mistakenly claiming for 50 packs of CareSens and/or On Call Advanced blood glucose test strips and lancets instead of claiming for 1 OP. PHARMAC would like to remind pharmacy staff to take care when dispensing these products as a quantity of 1 entered into dispensing software will result in one pack (50 strips and 5 lancets) being claimed.

6 Pharmaceutical Schedule - Update News

Sumatriptan – Arrow-Sumatriptan smaller pack size continued availability

Arrow-Sumatriptan tab 50 mg (4 tablet pack) and 100 mg (2 tablet pack) will remain fully subsidised and will not be delisted from 1 May 2010 as previously notified. The smaller pack sizes will continue to be listed in the Pharmaceutical Schedule at their current prices and subsidies until stock is exhausted, when PHARMAC will provide six months notice before delisting them from the Pharmaceutical Schedule.

Diclofenac sodium – delisting of alternative brands

The Apo-Diclo SR brand of diclofenac sodium long-acting 75 mg and long-acting 100 mg tablets will be delisted from the Pharmaceutical Schedule from 1 November 2010 as supplies of this brand are now exhausted. The Diclax SR brand of both strengths in the 500-tablet pack size will remain fully subsidised; however, the 30-tablet pack size of Diclax SR 75 mg tablets will be delisted from 1 August 2010. As notified in the April 2010 Update to the Pharmaceutical Schedule, the Voltaren SR brand of diclofenac sodium 75 mg longacting tablets will be delisted from 1 June 2010.

Moclobemide – delisting of GenRx Moclobemide brand

Supply of the Apo-Moclobemide brand of moclobemide tablets 150 mg and 300 mg has recently been resumed. As a result, the GenRx Moclobemide brand will be delisted from the Pharmaceutical Schedule from 1 November 2010. Sole Supply Status for ApoMoclobemide will be reinstated from 1 November 2010.

Tri-phasic oral contraceptives – delisting

PHARMAC has received notice that the last remaining supplier of subsidised tri-phasic oral contraceptives intends to discontinue from the New Zealand market. Trifeme will be delisted from 1 November 2010 (six months after notification from the supplier of stock depletion). The Hormone and Contraceptive Subcommittee of PTAC considered that there was no clinical need for a tri-phasic oral contraceptive to be subsidised and that Brevinor 1 would be an appropriate alternative.

Testosterone undecanoate capsules

On 24 December 2009 PHARMAC notified that Arrow Pharmaceuticals brand of testosterone undecanoate – ArrowTestosterone - had been awarded the 2008/09 Tender. The listing for this product was delayed by 3 months, until 1 May 2010. This will result in all the timelines for the tender process being moved by the same period of time. The listing of ArrowTestosterone will occur on 1 May 2010, reference pricing of non-tender winning brands, Andriol Testocaps and Panteston, will occur on 1 July 2010 and Sole Subsidised Supply for Arrow-Testosterone will commence on 1 October 2010.

Minerals – amendment to presentation descriptions

Following suggestions from healthcare professionals and a review by PHARMAC staff the line item descriptions of mineral products in the Pharmaceutical Schedule have been amended. The line item descriptions now specify the content of elemental content in brackets as well as the total weight of the salt form. This is expected to aid prescribers and pharmacists when determining dosage of minerals to prescribe/dispense. Full details of the changes can be found on page 19.

Laxofast – presentation amendment

The presentation of the Laxofast brand of docusate sodium (Laxofast 50 and Laxofast 120) has been amended from tablets to capsules. The presentation was listed as tablets last month when they are in fact capsules. PHARMAC would like to apologise for any confusion this may have caused.
