Dear Pharmacist / Wholesaler Due to a short supply of doxazosin mesylate tablets 2 mg and 4 mg, PHARMAC’s Chief Executive has approved the following temporary provision for stat prescriptions. Doxazosin mesylate (Apo-Doxazosin) tablets 2 mg and 4 mg, · · · From 19 April 2010 until further notice, a prescription for doxazosin mesylate (Apo-Doxazosin) tablets 2 mg or 4 mg will not require endorsement by the prescriber to be dispensed Close Control monthly. From 19 April 2010 until further notice, Pharmacists will be reimbursed all dispensing fees for prescriptions for doxazosin mesylate (Apo-Doxazosin) tablets 2 mg and 4 mg that are dispensed Close Control monthly. Upon notice of the ending of the Close Control period, the remainder of repeats for a prescription for doxazosin mesylate (Apo-Doxazosin) tablets 2 mg and 4 mg first dispensed Close Control monthly can either be (at the discretion of the pharmacist and stock availability) o completed Close Control monthly, or o dispensed stat where appropriate. Pharmacists will need to annotate any prescriptions dispensed Close Control for audit purposes. Instructions on how to amend pharmacy software systems have been provided.

Prazosin hydrochloride Out-of-Stock We have been advised that the current supplier of prazosin hydrochloride tablets in New Zealand, Apotex NZ Ltd, is running short of stock of the 1 mg and 2 mg tablets. There are no other registered suppliers in New Zealand. Prazosin hydrochloride 1 mg and 2 mg tablets are already on Close Control monthly dispensing without the need for doctor endorsement, effective 12 February 2010. Expected stock run out dates (based on current usage patterns) are: · · 1 mg tablets: June 2010 2 mg tablets: late April 2010

Options for patients include: · scored 5 mg prazosin hydrochloride tablets (there is sufficient stock of this strength)

doxazosin mesylate – Close Control also on pharmaceutical, however the supplier has informed us that the next shipment of doxazosin is due mid to late June. terazosin hydrochloride. The number of patients on prazosin is small and therefore any switch of these patients to doxazosin will have little effect on current stock holding of doxazosin.

Close control dispensing of “stat” medicine due to short supply

During this short supply period, if you want to dispense doxazosin with repeats, follow the prompt. i.e. say ”Yes” to mark as Close Control. Make sure you also manually annotate the prescription.
