Proposal to fund Flamazine (silver sulphadiazine)
PHARMAC is seeking feedback on a proposal to fund a new brand of silver sulphadiazine 1% cream (Flamazine) on the Pharmaceutical Schedule. Silver sulphadiazine is a topical antibacterial used primarily as a topical burn cream on second- and third-degree burns. This proposal would result in: • Flamazine being listed in Section B and Section H of the Pharmaceutical, as soon as practicable, at the following price and subsidy (ex-manufacturer and exclusive of GST):
Chemical Silver sulphadiazine Presentation Cream 1% Brand Flamazine Pack size 50 g OP Price and subsidy $12.30
•
Flamazine having delisting protection until 1 January 2012.
Flamazine is currently being evaluated by Medsafe and the listing would only occur if the product gains Medsafe approval. If it does, stock of Flamazine would be available from approximately the end of 2009. Feedback sought PHARMAC welcomes feedback on this proposal. To provide feedback, please submit it in writing by 5pm Thursday 17 September 2009 to: Mike Bignall Therapeutic Group Manager PHARMAC Email: mike.bignall@pharmac.govt.nz Fax: 04 460 4995 Post: PO Box 10 254, Wellington 6143
All feedback received before the closing date will be considered by PHARMAC’s Board (or Chief Executive acting under delegated authority) prior to making a decision on this proposal. Background PHARMAC and Smith and Nephew Limited have entered into a provisional agreement relating to the supply of silver sulphadiazine cream (Flamazine). We note that stocks of silver sulphadiazine 1% with 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate (Silvazine), as supplied by Smith and Nephew, will be depleted by the end of 2009 and that the supplier has notified that this brand will be discontinued at that time. As a result Silvazine will be delisted from the Pharmaceutical Schedule early in 2010. We note that Silvazine was produced only for use in Australia and New Zealand, with other countries using silver sulphadiazine 1% without the addition of chlorhexidine digluconate. This proposal would ensure that a suitable alternative brand was funded to ensure continuity of supply.
