Approval of listing of fluticasone nasal spray in the Pharmaceutical Schedule

PHARMAC is pleased to announce the approval of an agreement with GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare for the funding of fluticasone nasal spray (Flixonase Hayfever & Allergy). This was the subject of a consultation letter dated 7 July 2009. Details of the proposal Fluticasone nasal spray will be listed in Section B of the Pharmaceutical Schedule from 1 February 2010 as follows (price and subsidy are ex-manufacturer and exclusive of GST):

Chemical Fluticasone propionate Presentation Metered aqueous nasal spray, 50 µg per dose Brand Flixonase Hayfever & Allergy Pack size 120 dose OP Price and subsidy $13.34

A rebate will apply to subsidised dispensings of Flixonase Hayfever & Allergy effectively reducing its price to $3.38. Flixonase Hayfever & Allergy will be the sole subsidised brand of fluticasone nasal spray until 31 January 2013. We note that the decision differs in several aspects from what was included in the consultation letter. The listing date has been delayed by a month, and the list price of $3.38 has been replaced by a rebate – this allows a single headline price to be used for both the private and subsidised markets.
