Proposal regarding diabetes management products

Further to our consultation letter dated 31 July 2009, PHARMAC is now seeking feedback on an additional proposal to fund lancets in combination with the supply of the On Call Plus Advanced brand of blood glucose diagnostic test strips (as supplied by Diabetes Supplies).

All feedback received before the closing date will be considered by PHARMAC’s Board (or Chief Executive acting under delegated authority) prior to making a decision on this proposal.

Details of the proposal Lancets would be listed (in a combination pack with On Call Plus Advanced blood glucose diagnostic test strips) in Section B and Section H of the Pharmaceutical Schedule at the following price and subsidy (ex-manufacturer, excluding GST) as soon as practical following a satisfactory outcome from an independent and formal evaluation by the Christchurch Diabetes Centre:

Chemical Blood glucose diagnostic test strip

Form and Strength Blood glucose test strips and lancets

Brand On Call Plus Advanced

Pack size 50 test strips + 5 lancets

Price and subsidy $19.10

Background to the Proposal Diabetes Supplies has also agreed to supply 5 lancets with every box of 50 test strips (similar to the proposal recently consulted on for the CareSens brand of blood glucose diagnostic test strips). These lancets are compatible with the lancing device that is supplied with On Call Plus Advanced meter starter packs. We understand Diabetes Supplies would offer a free meter swap out for patients wanting to obtain its brand of lancets and blood glucose diagnostic test strips. We note that a decision, on the originally consulted proposal for On Call Plus Advanced (31 July 2009), is still pending with a final decision to be now made in conjunction with this proposal.
