Proposal to list fluticasone nasal spray (Flixonase) in the Pharmaceutical Schedule

PHARMAC is seeking feedback on a proposal to list the Flixonase brand of fluticasone nasal spray in the Pharmaceutical Schedule from 1 January 2010. Feedback sought PHARMAC welcomes feedback on this proposal. All feedback received before the closing date will be considered by PHARMAC’s Board (or Chief Executive acting under delegated authority) prior to making a decision on this proposal. Details of the proposal Flixonase would be listed in Section B of the Pharmaceutical Schedule from 1 January 2010 at the following price and subsidy (ex-manufacturer, exclusive of GST):

Chemical Fluticasone propionate Presentation Metered aqueous nasal spray, 50 µg per dose Brand Flixonase Pack size 120 dose OP Price and subsidy $3.38

Flixonase would be the sole subsidised supply brand of fluticasone nasal spray, and would be protected from subsidy and delisting protection, until 31 December 2012. Background Fluticasone nasal spray is used for the short-term treatment and prevention of seasonal allergic rhinitis, including hayfever. Fluticasone nasal spray is not currently listed in the Pharmaceutical Schedule, however other intra-nasal corticosteroids, beclomethasone and budesonide, are currently (and would remain) funded. We initiated a competitive process for supply of fluticasone nasal spray. Subsequent to this, we have entered into a provisional agreement with GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare for Flixonase to be listed as the sole subsidised supply brand of fluticasone nasal spray.
