Glibenclamide (Daonil) funding proposal approved
PHARMAC is pleased to announce the approval of a supply agreement with Sanofi Aventis for glibenclamide 5 mg tablets (Daonil). Daonil is a sulphonylurea used in the treatment of diabetes.
Summary of the decision
Daonil will be fully funded in Section B of the Pharmaceutical Schedule, as soon as practicable following regulatory approval by Medsafe, at a subsidy and price of $5.00 per 100 tablets (ex-manufacturer, excluding GST). The listing of Daonil is planned to coincide with the discontinuation of Gliben later this year by Pacific Pharmaceuticals. An update will be made closer to the time in the Pharmaceutical Schedule update. If you have any queries about this funding decision you can call our toll free number (9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday) on 0800 66 00 50.
What feedback was received?
We appreciate the feedback we received and acknowledge the time people took to respond. All consultation responses were considered in the decision on the proposed changes. All responses were supportive of the proposal to fully subsidise Daonil. One respondent considered that we should continue to subsidise a 2.5 mg glibenclamide dose. Unfortunately we have been unable to source a 2.5 mg tablet despite negotiating with a number of suppliers. We note that Australia only has the 5 mg strength and that Daonil 5 mg tablets are scored.
