Pharmacology and Therapeutics Advisory Committee

Application for PTAC Membership

PHARMAC is the government agency responsible for ensuring New Zealanders have access to a wide range of affordable medicines. PHARMAC makes a vital contribution to New Zealand’s health outcomes. The Pharmacology and Therapeutics Advisory Committee (PTAC) is an advisory committee to PHARMAC. It is made up of vocationally registered medical practitioners with expertise in clinical pharmacology, internal medicine and general practice. PTAC’s role, defined in legislation, is to provide PHARMAC’s Board with objective advice on pharmaceuticals and their benefits. PTAC considers and makes recommendations on proposed amendments to the Pharmaceutical Schedule, whether related to funding new medicines or changing funding criteria for medicines already funded. PTAC Members are appointed by the Director-General of Health, in consultation with the PHARMAC Board. The Director-General is seeking applications from suitably qualified and experienced clinicians to be appointed to the Pharmacology and Therapeutics Advisory Committee (PTAC). There is one vacancy. PTAC meets in Wellington at least four times a year. To be on PTAC, you should be active in clinical practice and ideally have: • excellent critical appraisal skills; • a good general knowledge of medicine and pharmaceuticals; • at least five years experience in your vocational field; • a high level of awareness and experience with the health issues facing Māori; • a good understanding of evidence-based medicine in clinical practice.
