Application For PTAC Membership

Representative of a Máori Health Perspective

PHARMAC is a Crown Entity, recognised for its dynamic management of prescription medicine subsidies. Our objective is to secure for eligible people in need of pharmaceuticals, the best health outcomes that are reasonably achievable from pharmaceutical treatment within the amount of funding provided to us by government. PHARMAC wishes to recommend the appointment of a suitably qualified and experienced member to the Pharmacology and Therapeutics Advisory Committee (PTAC) to replace the current Máori representative on PTAC. PTAC Members are appointed by the Director General of Health, in consultation with the Board of PHARMAC (in accordance with the Protocol for the Appointment of the Members of PTAC). PTAC is a committee of vocationally registered medical practitioners with expertise in clinical pharmacology, internal medicine, and general practice. The primary purpose of PTAC is to provide PHARMAC’s Board with independent clinical advice on the pharmacological and therapeutic consequences of proposed amendments to the Pharmaceutical Schedule. Taking into account PHARMAC’s decision criteria, PTAC considers and makes recommendations on clinical issues relating to the management of the Pharmaceutical Schedule. Full meetings of PTAC are held in Wellington at least four times a year. To be a suitable applicant you should be active in clinical practice and ideally have: • understanding and knowledge of te reo Máori me ona tikanga Máori; • a high level of awareness and experience with the health issues facing Máori; • well-developed networks within Máori communities; • excellent critical appraisal skills; • a good general knowledge of medicine and pharmaceuticals; • at least five years experience in your vocational field; • good presentation skills; • the ability to work constructively in a group and accept consensus decision-making; • the ability to work with a budget and make decisions under pressure; • the ability to differentiate between an individual and societal perspective on issues; and • a good understanding of evidence-based medicine in clinical practice.
