A proposal to change the way some medicines are dispensed by pharmacies is being welcomed by all District Health Boards. Auckland DHB Chief Executive Graeme Edmond, speaking on behalf of all DHBs, says the proposal, developed by PHARMAC, has benefits for patients, DHBs, pharmacists and the wider health sector. The proposal will free up around $35 million funding for DHBs to fund additional services in priority areas while improving convenience for patients, says Graeme Edmond.

People will have to make fewer trips to the pharmacy to collect their medicine under proposed changes to the way prescriptions are dispensed The public is being asked for its views on the proposal, which would make it more convenient for people to get their medicine from their pharmacy by enabling most three month prescriptions to be dispensed at the first visit, rather than in monthly lots as happens at present.
